1.Absorption spectroscopy, two-wave mixing, and self-pumped phase conjugation have been employed in our laboratory to explore the particle and energy transfer processes determining the generation of gratings in photorefractive crystals. Such processes govern the speed and efficiency of phase conjugation, data storage, and associative memory. By means of temporally modulated laser beams, we have observed oscillatory behavior with damping in two-wave mixing. We are trying to interprete it.

2.According to our study on dye laser system for the evolution of pulse characteristics and similar phenomena described in literature, key factors leading to self-modelocking have been suggested. Further investigations on this subject will be done to identify the effectiveness of such factors Results to be obtained are expected to be helpful for improving the design of ultrashort pulse laser systems.

3.Systems for continuous-wave photo-assisted absorption spectroscopy, photo-acoustic spectroscopy and reflection spectroscopy have been established in our lab. They have been applied to study biological and organic samples such as golden leaves and light-emitting conjugate polymers. Near field microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and optical tweezers are applied to study the behavior of biological cells in collaboration with researchers in the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica.

4.Much attention has been paid to perform effective teaching of General Physics for students majoring in life-sciences. An integrated series of courses on Modern Optics has been prepared. It intends to provide an interesting field to play with knowledges gained from other courses and a solid training for theoretical and experimental preparation to those who might pursue a career in modern photonics.
