Research

The subject of liquid crystals (LCs) is a relatively new area of research. It provides a unique system for the fundamental study of phase transitions and potential applications in LCD industry. LC materials and conductive polymers which possess intrinsic self-assembly and phase-separation nature have strong applications in nanometer-scale science and device technology. Our current research interests are:

  1. Structural study of nano-scale LC thin films using transmission electron microscope (TEM).
  2. Photothermal analyses of nano-scale LC thin films using ultra high-resolution ac calorimeter.
  3. Low-dimensional physics, critical phenomena & optics of LC thin film system.
  4. Study of self-assembly properties of LCs & conductive polymers & their development in nano device technology.
  5. Electro-optical study of LCDs in various optical modes.
  6. Study & development of LCOS technology and its potential application in rear-projection TV; Development of next generation fast-response & high-resolution LC display (V-LCD).

Moreover, the delicate properties of the LC phases are of also particular importance to many biological processes. We are currently interested in the problem-How antibiotic peptides and transducing peptides of viruses tunnel into cell membranes. Specially modified environmental TEM will be our major experimental technique for this research.
